Trans-European Express. New Technologies as Women’s Fancywork of the Unisex Epoch
Irina Kulik
Vremia Novostey, January 22, 2001
Photography, video art, computer technologies are becoming the most widespread format of contemporary art. The futuristic aura once enveloping the art of newmedia, is no longer there.
… Young German artists Heike Baranowsky and Anke Cott whose works are presented in "TV Gallery" are dealing with technological art as a sort of a customary fancywork. Though, unlike the works of feminist art using fabrics and ceramics, they are involved with the fancywork of the unisex epoch.
… German women artists once again present that original mechanical realism inherited in the art of new technologies. This realism not only makes the equipment create "verisimilar" images but rather thoroughly reproduce the mechanisms of our perception and consciousness. Just like humane androids from science fiction films, new technologies bear sentimentality, which had been long ago forced out from contemporary art. They keep even useless memories and put them in beautiful virtual caskets.
