"TV Gallery" has been working on the series of films about the artists for about ten years. We happened to collect very interesting materials – interviews with the artists, comments of art critics, recollections of friends and brothers-in-arms, video materials of the exhibitions; also, we gathered a lot of newsreel on this theme. During the last years we issued two documentaries: "Wings of Freedom, or One Collection’s Stories", 1996, and "From Gulag to Glasnost. The Art of Resistance", 2001; a cycle of the programs about nonconformist artists, "Portraits of the Artists", 2001, which were successfully shown on "Kultura" TV Channel.

Now Art Media Center "TV Gallery" would like to call your attention to a cycle of ten TV programs under the general name "Classics of Contemporary Art", presenting the portraits of distinguished artists from different countries, our contemporaries, whose names became the common property of history in their lives. They are our fellow countrymen and foreign artists as well – Dmitry Alexandrovich Prigov, Francisco Infante, Simon Faibisovich, Victor Pivovarov, Grisha Bruskin, Marlen Spindler, Dennis Oppenheim, Earle Brown, Morton Subotnick, Nancy Spero. All of them are vusual artists, though some names are connected with achievements either in poetry or in music. Their works prima facie seem enigmatic, but they are always extremely interesting and many-sided. Each of them demonstrates an unusual view on life in his pretty unusual works, be it painting, sculpture, literature, music, photography.

The works of every hero of ours are exhibited in prestigious world galleries and kept in the most famous world museums. Unfortunately, in our country their works are known to a very narrow circle of experts, they are practically not available to the wide audience. So far our television has not had the programs dedicated to the works of the artists who happened to enter the world culture annals.

Author, show-host and producer of the cycle – Nina Zaretskaya

The cycle of programs was produced with the support of Ford Foundation and Internews.
